Following his characteristic style where the questions outweigh the answers, he turned us into researchers on topics like the nature of the Labyrinth, the connection between the sensory and the embodiment of the invisible as well as the role of imagination in unlocking everybody’s inner Labyrinth of images, associations and memories. Because every person is a labyrinth. How to find the labyrinth in ourselves and in the Other? This is the main question which the creator of the sensory theatre put forward last year.

THIS SUMMER Enrique Vargas is coming back to take us even deeper in the sensory-poetic language and its many possibilities. The next step in this journey is touching upon the vast topic of the role of the object in sensory theatre.

THE NEW workshop is called “Poetics of the Object”.

We are going to come closer to the SECRET which is hidden in the world of objects. What does it mean to listen to an object without manipulating it? How can we enter the world of symbols using visible objects? How can we find the big in the small? How can we create a Labyrinth from the small objects surrounding us and thus help the participants in it to travel deep inside themselves?

These are only a few of the questions which this workshop will touch upon. Moreover, this is a unique and exciting opportunity for the participants to meet the creator of the methodology – the theatrical shaman Enrique Vargas, and to work closely with the Bulgarian core team of the Sensory Theatre Sofia.

Another interesting thing about this year’s workshop is the SETTING – the small but mystical village of Hotnitsa near Veliko Tarnovo. It is famous for its beautiful waterfall and a treasure which was found in its lands. In recent years the village has started to become a local center of alternative culture and many foreigners have decided to settle here permanently. There is a plan to make Hotnitsa a hot spot for sensory labyrinth theatre arts and to host a context oriented festival there in the future. This year’s workshop with Vargas will be a step in that direction – the creator of the sensory labyrinth will bless the place and open the doors for many more similar events to take place there. The participants in the workshop will be a part of the BEGINNING of this process.

When?

July 28 – arrival; workshop activities between 5-9 pm

July 29-30 – workshop activities between 11 am and 8 pm both days (incl. breaks)

PRICE for participation in the workshop – 250 BGN per person

TRAVEL & ACCOMMODATION – every participants is responsible for arranging his/her travel and accommodation which is not included in the price quoted above. There is a possibility for accommodation in hotels and hostels in Veliko Tarnovo. Participants can also camp in the village of Hotnitsa if they bring their own tents. The camping conditions are like at every summer festival.

FOOD – on the principle of sharing. There is a possibility to cook in the village and participants can share what they have brought with the rest of the group.

SIGNING UP FOR THE WORKSHOP – please send short information about yourself, your motivation to take part in the workshop and conctact details at info@sensorytheatresofia.com by JULY 10!

PLACES ARE LIMITED – an interest in interactive and experimental theatre as well as a desire to take part in the projects organized by the Sensory Theatre Sofia is considered an advantage.

Workshop language – English

Who is ENRIQUE VARGAS?

Enrique Vargas was born in Colombia in 1940. In 1955 he started studying dramaturgy, acting and directing at the National Dramaturgy School of Bogota. For six years, starting in 1960. He studied drama anthropology in Michigan, at the Kalamazoo College. He then became a playwright and director for one of the most important experimental theatres in the world, La Mama in New York, where he crafted impressive and thought-provoking works that express his peculiar research in the development of a body language. Later on he became a playwright and head of the Gut Theatre in East Harlem. The works he made in those days show a peculiar, unique re-use of the popular festivals the Puerto Ricans celebrate in the streets of New York. These shows are a tool to develop a dramatic game whose key feature, in addition to body expression, is the search for a “playing space”. His aim was to turn attendees into participants, protagonists of their own festival, actors staging a collective ritual.

In the early ‘70s he focused on dramaturgy of object animation at the Central Theatre in Prague and in the early ‘80s he became director of the Theatre Research Centre of the National University of Colombia. In that same period he focused especially on the relationship between the game, the ritual and the childhood myths of the Indio communities living in the Amazon Region of Colombia. At the end of the ‘80s he directed several works, and after founding, in 1993, the Teatro de los Sentidos (Theatre of the Senses) he wrote, staged and directed a trilogy of works called Under the sign of the Labyrinth During his renowned career he was awarded several prizes like the Quebec Expo Theatre Festival 1967 prize, the Colombia National Dramaturgy Prize (1988); the First Prize at the National Salon of Plastic Arts (1992); the Tucan de Oro prize at the Cadiz Theatre Festival (1993); the UNESCO Theatre Research Prize (1995). He collaborates with El Espectador, the oldest and most renowned Colombian information magazine.

The legendary founder of the Sensory Labyrinth Theatre ENRIQUE VARGAS is coming AGAIN to Bulgaria this summer to lead another workshop on his unique poetic and thatrical language. During his last year’s workshop titled “The Nature of Labyrinth and the Mystery of Game” Vargas introduced us to his sensory methodology.
