Sensory Theatre Sofia is an unconventional cultural phenomenon. Founded in 2010 Sensory Theatre Sofia has been a key driver in the field of sensory/immersive art in Bulgaria. With over 40 performances, hundreds of sensory journeys, concerts, artistic residencies, team-building events, and training programs, it has continuously expanded the boundaries of artistic experience.

By developing and implementing “soft” sensory “technologies”, Sensory Theatre Sofia has created new genres and sub-brands such as: The Institute for Silence Research, The Agency for Magical Experiences, The Center for New Urban Utopias.

Through these, the Theatre interweaves art and life, blending narratives into what we call Reality.
One of its missions is to expand the limits of the imaginable and the thinkable, fulfilling its role as an Embassy of the Future.

WHAT IS THE SENSORY THEATRE?

  • A multi-genre/syncretic form of art incorporating elements from literally all other arts—theatre, music, visual arts, dance, literature, architecture, new technologies, etc.
  • A powerful sensory experience that activates all senses—sometimes involving blindfolding the audience or guiding them in complete darkness.
  • An unconventional performance, where spectators enter one by one and follow a pre-designed route, encountering the artists personally. It offers a deeply intimate meeting between human beings.
  • A site-specific spectacle, directly connected to its environment—taking place in factories, museums, malls, public or business buildings, private homes, streets, parks, islands, and other unexpected locations in the city or nature.

HOW DOES THE SENSORY THEATRE WORK?

  • Directly (and personally) engages the audience in a theatrical interaction where the "spectator" becomes the main character.
  • Uses archetypal imagery and neologisms to create performances resembling modern rituals.
  • Activates self-exploration and self-reflection, unlocking different images, memories, and associations within the audience.
  • Develops its own poetic, sensory language, often working beyond words and beyond what is visible to the eyes.
