Urban Utopias is a long-term project by Sensory Theatre Sofia, dedicated to artistic interventions and poetic performances in urban environments. The project views and explores the city as a natural stage — a mise-en-scène where unusual creative interventions and performances unfold, blending art and life until they can no longer be clearly separated.
This is an art of surprise and the unexpected, using the expressive tools of sensory theatre, movement performance, and costume design, suddenly appearing in everyday urban spaces — streets, squares, parks, and city gardens — and involving the audience in active creative interaction.
Created as a rupture in the banal repetition of daily life, Urban Utopias provides the minimal dose of wonder, surprise, and magic needed to remind us of our nature as astonished, astonishing beings, creating as effortlessly as we breathe.
The artistic interventions present unusual, memorable images — visual compositions that remain in memory and reflect back onto everyday reality, redefining it and adding a poetic dimension.
The unusual, surreal characters emerging from immersive performances immediately become the epicenter of the familiar urban landscape. They naturally draw attention, fill the mind with questions, invite photographs and social media sharing (turning casual viewers into co-creators), and give the impression that the audience has been chosen — by the law of non-coincidence — to witness a secret ritual, scenes connecting different dimensions and realities.
Expect new characters and immersive performances between June and September as part of the Summer Open-Air Cultural Program of Sofia Municipality.
